In our spring unit, third graders will be building their conflict resolution skills. A key first step in determining how to solve a problem is to decide how large the problem is. This is key in learning how to respond and what steps to take. Students took their knowledge of a number line, and used 4 guiding questions to rate problems on a 1-5 scale. These guiding questions include:
Based on the answers, students placed problems appropriately on the scale. Overall, problems rated as a 1 are things that often do not require a solution, but can be resolved by simply staying calm. A problem that is a 2 still mostly only affects one person, but requires an action to be fixed. The scale continues up to a 5, which is considered an emergency. Below is an example of some problems students worked to sort!
- Is the problem dangerous?
- How long will the problem last?
- How many people are involved?
- How can the problem be solved?
